A photocatalyst initiates the oxidation decomposition of organic matter via the ultraviolet energy of sunlight or fluorescent lamps. In general, when the photocatalytic film using organic acrylic and epoxy resins as a binder is used outdoors, decomposition of the resin causes a choking phenomenon*.Also, when an inorganic binder is used, the resin covering the photocatalytic particle lowers the activity of the catalyst surface, which becomes a problem. These problems are solved by Ecoatio, a paint that combines an inorganic porous binder and a photocatalyst.　*Choking phenomenon: a phenomenon in which resin in the paint film resolves to expose the surface, which turns the resin powdery.

When ultraviolet rays are radiated to the photocatalytic oxidized titanium, O₂^- (superoxide) and OH (hydroxy radical) are produced. The strong oxidation strength of those substances allows air purification (removal of NOx) and decomposition of dirt.
